Call for Papers for Internatioal Workshop in Berlin in June 2027
The city of Breslau was once home to the third-largest Jewish community in Germany. From the late eighteenth century through the twentieth century, a remarkable number of Jewish women from Breslau/Wrocław and Silesia shaped education and professional life, politics, healthcare, philanthropy and civic culture as well as literary, religious, and intellectual debates. Their lives were often embedded in networks that moved beyond religious, linguistic, national, and professional boundaries, linking Jewish, German, Polish, and wider European worlds. They made important contributions despite the discrimination based on gender and antisemitism.
The Institute for the History of the German Jews is a partner in an international workshop to be held in Berlin from 8 to 9 June 2027. For our workshop, we invite papers that examine the lives, work, and legacies of Jewish women from Breslau/Wrocław and Silesia. Particularly welcome are works that examine individual biographies within their broader social and cultural contexts.
Conceived as a collaborative research workshop, papers of will be circulated among all participants before the workshop. Selected essays will be developed into a peer-reviewed English-language edited volume. Proposals may be submitted in German or English and to Lisa Fetheringill Zwicker at zwicker@iu.edu by 6 November 2026.
